Inspired by yoga, adapted for sport, Sports Yoga was developed by Sarah Ramsden who works with professional football clubs including Manchester United and Manchester City. She is best known for her work with Ryan Giggs. I have trained with Sarah and am a fully qualified Sports Yoga Teacher.
This adapted Yoga is designed to keep athletes moving fluidly and efficiently, increasing range, suppleness, and freedom of movement, relieving muscle tension and developing core strength and stability.
It can be adapted to specific sports, understanding the demands the sport makes on athletes, and then training functional movement and stability relevant to the sport.
Sports Yoga can reduce injuries related to over-use of muscles, core weakness and restricted joint movement. It is particularly useful for ageing bodies, allowing you to go on doing the sport you enjoy for longer.
Whilst designed for athletes, this class would benefit anyone looking to improve strength, flexibility, stability and overall fitness. This style of yoga involves functional movement, in other words it does not take the body beyond what it was designed to do – no crazy stretches or contortions!
Classes move from spinal flexibility to higher energy standing and core work building strength, stability, balance, co-ordination, to deep, longer stretches to create a supple, flexible body. They will challenge your strength, balance, flexibility and even your breathing.
